How to Redirect a Domain Using DNS Records (URL Redirect)

If you have registered a domain with DOMAINScanada.ca and wish to redirect this domain name to another domain, this is a simple process that requires the addition of two DNS records.

To access the DNS settings for your domain, follow the How to Update/Manage DNS guide and then enter the URL Redirection specific DNS entries below.

1. Create the first URL Redirect record with the domain name you are directing to:

Host Name Record Type Address Priority
@ URL Redirect
http://www.example.ca/

2. Click 'Save Changes' to save the record.

3. Next create the second URL Redirect with the domain name you are directing to:

Host Name Record Type Address Priority
www URL Redirect
http://www.example.ca/

4. Click 'Save Changes' to save the record.

There are two different DNS record types that can forward your domain, one is URL a Redirect as described above and the other is a URL Frame. The difference between these two methods is that a URL Redirect will redirect to the URL specified and display the target URL in the browser address box, while the URL Frame mothod will display your domain in the browser address box and display the target site in a frame while masking the target URL. Not all sites permit the use of frames.

To use the URL frame method simply substitue the URL Redirect record type with the URL Frame record type when making the two DNS records descriped above.
